U.S Beach pollution dips but remains too high
Summary
Beach water pollution dropped from 8% to 7% due to a decreased amount of rainfall that would flush pollutants into the ocean-- not because of a reduction in pollution. California has the highest number of beach closures in the country, revealing that beach pollution is not improving. Some California beaches are some of the cleanest while others are are in the top for the nation's "offenders". |
Commentary
California, renown for it's "golden coast", should try to implement more policy in order to limit coastal pollution and decrease the need to shut down beaches. Coastal cities should realize that the most effective way to help save our beaches is to prevent polluting them in the first place. Also, cleaning up what is already polluted can help keep the water from being detrimental to swimmer's and family's health. Higher quality standards can help prevent people from being exposed to heavily polluted water. Beach clean ups are a long-term process but preventing sewage overflows and run-off from getting to the water can help limit the damage done to our oceans. |
